The Struggle With Perfection

Feeling stuck is something I’m familiar with.

I always knew where I saw my life headed, but my internal GPS continued to lead me in directions other than intended. I had this outline in front of me, perfectly mapped out, yet those first steps eluded me. From career, to relationships, fertility, and parenting, I envisioned it all yet always felt as if something was holding me back.

I felt like a failure.

If I wasn’t doing it perfectly and with a smile on my face, then I had to be failing. Right?

Thankfully, I could not have been more wrong.

I decided to start doing my own personal work to better understand myself. With the support and compassion of my incredible therapist, I was able to recognize that the outline of life was garbage and instead needed to be replaced with what actually felt right for me.

I had to face the traumas of my past and begin to heal from what caused me to feel stuck. Confronting the dark side of my experiences was heart wrenching and often times confusing and yet nothing has been more rewarding in the end. I began to understand my inner world and who I truly am, not just what looks “pretty” on social media.

Struggling With Infertility - It’s okay that it sucks

It’s not easy for everyone to get pregnant. 

Trying to conceive colored the way I approached every aspect of life. I saw through a singular lens, fertility. If it wasn't helping to put a baby in my belly, then it wasn't on my radar. This single-focused mentality affected my romantic and personal life. If I had to do things perfectly earlier in life, then this self-proclaimed, reformed perfectionist was going to PERFECT fertility.

In my battle with perfectionism, I started reverting back to old habits and needed to remember balance and patience. I found myself clinging to the idea of having my baby, only to realize I was overlooking all the good that was present in my life.

I was missing out on what was right in front of me.

Infertility is a silent battle many face, often accompanied by a whirlwind of emotions - from hope to despair, excitement to frustration. Every negative pregnancy test felt like a personal failure, a cruel reminder of the dreams that had been unfulfilled.

The societal pressure and the often unsolicited advice from well-meaning friends and family only added to the weight. Questions like 'When are you starting a family?' became a painful sting, a reminder of the struggle I was privately enduring.

Yet, through this journey, I learned the importance of self-compassion, of understanding that it's okay to grieve, to be angry, and to seek support. Infertility isn't just a medical challenge; it's an emotional roller coaster, and it's okay to acknowledge the toll it takes.
